I thought there was a homicide or something when I drove back to my place after work. cruiser was blocking the street. I had to show ID to get passed to get to my place. Looked out from the balcony later and the other end of the loop is closed off too. People are still playing tennis at the courts and people walking by. So I said fuckit and had my shower. Come out, and they're still there. Cops are standing there doing nothing. Then some sirens, and now Kingsway is blocked off with cruisers. Either the Global or ghettobird was flying overhead too. Then these black cars start turning out of my loop onto Kingsway and there's crowd of (crazy-japanese) people along Kingsway. I thought the emperor left already, but I guess not. He didn't even leave me a sixer for my inconvenience... :p
This is what 300mm gets you. Come to think of it, a sniper in my tower or the other one would have been a prime spot, but no spotters on the rooftop. Did they bring those black sedan's from Japan? Lexus/Toyota/Nissan?

I'm going to try to do some lame-ass blog'ing from now 'til wedding day just for fun. At least it's raining and cool. The fucking Goodyear F1's still feel sketchy, even though they get a better rating than the Bridgestone RE-070 "slicks". It's probably just the oil on the road from no rain in the past few weeks.
Need to finish this beer, filter through some more photos, upload, and then watch Samurai Champloo before bed. I did install a new 35ft network cable between the xbox and router so it'll actually be long enough with the new office configuration. That is all for a Tuesday night.

7:19 pm - Stuff... and more stuff, stuffed in pre-6 weeks 'til the day
|
Either it's some "reflection" bullshit, countdown 'til wedding day (T-6 weeks), or the nostalgic Top Gear soundtrack (Eluviam - Perfect Neglect...) I'm listening to, I've decided to post a rambling post about the last 6-12 mos... no, it's probably the shitty (left over stag camping) beer... :p
I forget when it was, but a few months ago I guess I had kicked it into higher-gear with the wedding preparations. All was good, because Karen was doing an excellent job all year with the preparations since day 1. She's that kind of gal, with making sure that everyone's needs would be taken care of, and then hers. I was always like, fuk'em and just plan it how YOU desire. That was how I was going to do my part at least, haha.
The major stuff was taken care of. I had simple input. I like to think I'm a simple kind of guy. I admit this planning has gotten to me to a point. There's an Internet pic on there somewhere, captioned: "Fuuuuuuughhk!K!". It's quite ugly, and probably done in Microsoft Paint.
Anyways, somehow it's gotten down to the last 6-weeks. I think it was the stag last week that finally chimed in that, holy-shit, i'm getting married... (no exclamation point, because you know how i'm not THAT vibrant.. online at least!). I would say the major planning was easy, thanks to K, but the follow-thru stuff has been utter bullshit which I'm having to put effort into seeing it through. Nevertheless, it's been an experience. At least Michael Jackson won't die on my wedding day or some other shit.
I'll post some pics with the transformation my place has taken in the last few weeks - steamcleaning, re-arranging new furniture, boxed up old 'junk'. Thrown out quite a bit of crap from 10-yrs ago, and some fucked up shit from ex-gf's that they gave me instead of saying, 'hey, here's this gift you can figure out, instead of taking 1 min to tell you... you know the rest'. Was that quite funny? It sounded quite funny when I typed it.
I am truly terrified about my wedding day. it's only actually 10-min of the ceremony where I have to make sure I don't fuck up, and about 3-min during the reception to make sure I don't say any fucked up shit and maybe 2 min while I'm dressed up or cutting the cake. Other than that, I'm truly looking forward to spending roughly 16hrs experiencing a once in a life time moment with my family and friends!

I invested in a Hoover Steamvac F5912-900 to do the carpets. I haven't done the carpets since I bought the place. I've just been using my Hoover Windtunnel and it's kept the carpets pretty clean. I dry-vac'd first, then steam cleaned. hardly any big particles - just dirty water. I bought a Steamvac instead of renting a Rug Doctor since my brother did make a good point that there'd be all sorts of shit on the rental machine rollers. People steam cleaning dog shit, piss, puke, stains, etc. This way, I can use it in case of a big spill too.
So far so good. It's quite loud, but no louder than a rental i'd say. It has multiple spin brushes to hit the carpet from all sides to get the dirt out. Separate clean and collection tank. You can see how dirty the water gets from a 4x10 ft patch that I've been sticking to. 4x10 ft takes about half a tank of water and 2.5oz of solution. Then I refill the tank with just hot, almost boiling water and rinse out the carpet in case there's solution residue.
Gets rid of old food stains good. I have some stains from my old wooden bed frame. It must be the wood glue or something. Or something oil based maybe. That won't come out. My lamp stand has a rubber/plastic base. It must have out-gassed from the temperature. There's a slight yellow tinge it's left, but the Steamvac has taken care of that one.
Definitely worth it to spend > $200 on a vacuum or Steamvac. I had a Bissel spot cleaner, but that crapped out pretty quick. My Hoover Windtunnel cost around $400 but it's been running strong since I got it. That's about 5 years at least, and it still picks up everything on the floor. We'll see how long the Steamvac lasts.

I was finishing pumping my gas at Chevron when some older guy starts asking if my car is really fast as it looks... I say, it's as fast as the amount of gas it sucks. A little something he could relate to maybe. He asks me how high it tops out. I told him i've never topped it out before. He asks again, no really? He starts going off about how he has a souped up MR2 with nitrous, blah, blah, blah. And that was it... :unamused: are you trying to have a conversation, or just bragging about how big your cock is? Why don't you go brag to some chick that might actually be convinced how awesome you are. What a stupid fag. That was the dumbest car guy I've ever had to talk to.

8:45 pm - It's time for a fan
|
I bought a 12" Honeywell fan. I was going to get the cheap $19.99 8" fan, but the unit itself looked small, so I spent $39.99 on this one. The reviews posted that this one is too loud. I don't get how people want everything for as little as possible. That shows how selfish and fucking stupid people are. You want a 12" fan, to blow all of that cool air in, or all of that hot air out, with minimal noise at an effective rate, and at an electricity consumption amount so you don't freak out at your electric bill. You might as well go kill yourself now.
Well this 12" isn't enough to entirely circulate the air around my 750sq. ft. place. My dad has a seabreeze fan which he has by the sliding door. At 7am it's blowing all of the hot air out the sliding door while sucking air in through the front door. It's freezing cold at 7:15am, lol. But that's a $89.99 fan. But this one is good enough since I don't want papers and shit blowing all over the place.
So on the lowest of 3 levels it's pretty sweet while I listen to music and it's quiet enough.

We got our invitations and programs finished up a little while ago. I was waiting to see this through until I posted a review.
We had won a ~$400 voucher with Deep in Design so we decided to buy our own material - invitation cards, rsvp cards, program stock paper and get the design done up and printed pro. Luckily she agreed to use our material and it sounded like it could all be done for around the voucher price or maybe a bit extra. Not a big deal... let's go!
Karen had spoken with her before to get the ball rolling, but when I was able to first meet her, we reviewed in person about the invitation and program layout. We took examples to show her the font, layout so it would be easier for her to design it up. That definitely did help. The program was laid out to be a 3-layer piece. Everything we wanted was discussed and laid out in person. We got verbally quoted too, and the price was ok.
Paragraphs end here, because there's too much shit to write. Point form in chronological order:
Quotation Antics:
- Few weeks later we get a PDF quote which was more than our verbal quote. Reason given: cost increases due to decline in the economy. My experience with quotes is that you don't change them on your clients. it's not a time and materials contract, wtf.
- Karen emailed her again to find out why it went up, and her second reply reason was because of the assembly time for the 3-layer program. Nice inconsistent reasoning here and when we met in person, we already showed her it was to be 3-layers so the initial quote should have taken that into account.
- I got pissed and called her in person to figure this shit out. Her third reason now instead is that the materials have gone up in price. Price for double-sided tape, etc. has gone up. I figure her business is new and she's not used to this maybe so we worked out the labour so that we wouldn't have to pay as much in the end.
- At this point, I drafted out milestones for the $95 out of our pocket work - preview, and review dates, final completion date, etc. All materials to be pre-cut since we were doing some labour ourselves. Sample to be provided at the end so we know what it'll look like.
- The line items on some of the quotations kept changing, like she was shuffling numbers around.
Design Antics:
- RSVP cards couldn't be printed on because of the folded edge. No big deal. Whipped them out on the HP Photosmart printer with zero problems. Thinking about it, don't pro printers have this sort of capability if a $150 HP deskjet can print on it fine? I didn't have a problem with this since the price was adjusted for not printing these, and she did warn us about the possibility. That was cool.
- The flip-flop dialog was fine to get the design finalized. Whenever we listed the changes we wanted, she would change them, but then change some other shit which messed up the design. So we'd email her again to re-fix the stuff that didn't need initial fixing.
- This one part of her design kind of irk'd me which I thought was worth posting: The program was two columns of text. She left justified one column and the other was right justified I believe. To an untrained eye, it looks better if the two columns span out from the center of the paper. So the column text layout would resemble a tree...
- She fucking designed up a lily graphic instead of an orchid that we requested. We had initially sent her pictures too.
- She can't measure 1.5cm spacing for the horizontal ribbon. We had to tell her twice.
- Basically, it seems like we'd tell her to change something, but she would go off and do some other changes that she thought was dope... which really didn't help anything.
Other Retardeness:- Turned out some of the paper we supplied had defects on one side so they couldn't be used. Not a big deal, we just took her offer to pay her to use her source to make up the material. She even took our extra payment for that. When you take money, you better be pretty confident or have some sort of plan to see your work through...
- Emails us a week later and says her printer just happens to not have that same color anymore... she asked what we want to do now? Ok, she's a pro designer and she's asking her clients what we want to do... instead of acting like a pro and offering alternatives or use her awesome pro-contacts to find a different supplier. Wait, I guess she only has one printer... no backup. I mean, there's tons of art supply shops to find a similar enough color paper too, wtf.
- She defends herself saying she doesn't usually accept material from clients because 'these kind of things happen'. Well you used your judgement to accept our material. And you as the pro found that that it was fine enough to use, so stop your bitching!
- At this point we've written her off. We had already made up the cards and we found a way to make the amount we made work for the wedding. So we just told her to forget it, and she mailed us our extra payment back for the unsourced paper.
- Oh yeah, she said the total final was $75 for everything, but we corrected her it should be $95. She gave a dumbfuck look and shrugged her fuck up off. I think she realized that she fucked up her numbers. It's like she writes things down, but then doesn't refer back to her notes after.
I think that's about it. So, if you want to be dicked around by someone who says is a pro, then don't use Deep in Design. It's like she's playing around to be a wanna-be pro designer. Had I known it would have taken this much effort to see this through, I would have just done up the whole thing myself on the computer. This chick is too stupid or too deep in her designing to care to know how the fuck a business works. I think she already knows we won't be telling other people know how awesome she is.

7:50 pm - Southland is pretty awesome
|
|
I just watched most of the Southland episodes. It feels like a cop version of entourage. Are they cancelling it already? I like the Band of Brother actors, so that's partially why I like the show. "Officer, what's going on here? [looks at a fallen tree on the road] "What does it look like? A UFO just crash landed!" lol...

Someone school me on the easiest way to transition from home home to another without being homeless in-between. Usually you have to sell your place first and then get your profit from your property before you can plunk that down on a new property. In-between, you're sort of stuck having no home. I guess you can have a clause in your contract stating that you don't hand over your property until you find a new one, but of course the buyers don't usually like a long wait.

Here's a good example how stratas can be fucking stupid.
Arranged ahead of time to throw out my old single bed mattress and wooden frame. Asked the manager if he wanted to throw up the elevator pads. He said not necessary. He thought the wooden pieces were smaller than they really were. But no one asked to see it. Strata president sees the stuff going out and says nope, can't move it without the pads up. Says I'm going to get fined. No interest in doing his job better by hearing how the manager said the pads weren't needed or to figure out the situation. He might as well take on the role of strata security, not president. Emailed the corporate strata manager my story and got this, confirming the president is a fucking dick head, Nazi control freak. Now, to get the fuck out of here ASAP away from strata... I need a good house.
"Ken: Thanks for your email. I will discuss you issues with council. Unfortunately the President sometimes acts on his own without the knowledge or agreement of myself, council or the caretakers."
Funny part was the disposal guys were young, so they got as much heat as me. But the one guy's first words are "why're you such an asshole?", lol. And then the president says I can get fined for not controlling my guests... they're not my guests, i hired them to move shit out. You might as well police people for not picking up dog shit or going faster than 10km/h in the parkade, (which the majority do, not me).

I know how sleeping in late on a weekend just happens, but how do I end u pwaking up before 9am on a Sunday? I don't have a mad rush of things to get done today at all. Just sippin' on my instant coffee. It's a PITA to make a real cup with the coffee maker for one person.
The single bed has been cleaned up and ready for the dudes to come get rid of it for me. They'll donate it to somewhere they can find, and if not, it goes to the landfill. Not bad for a 1970's bed for lasting this long. I'll post about the removal company later. They're family/local owned and not a chain, so the $65 they quoted me is significantly less. It's just as expensive to rent a truck, pay the landfill fee and waste time hauling it down there myself for a single item. It'd be a different story for an entire truckload. Anyways, after it's gone we have to measure out the space for Karen's new working area, and maybe a bookshelf or two.

9:50 pm - p90x
|
Nothing else to post about, so here's p90x. I thought I had posted about it before... I don't see it.
I'm only doing it to build back up, upper body strength, shed some fat. Otherwise, eating less carbs, still drink beer and taking a day break in between each session (3 sessions a week). I don't have the thing to do pull ups and don't know if I want to try it and fuck up my door frame and paneling. So instead, I'm doing dumb bell exercises.
Current day: 41
Morning/Evening averages: Day 1: 123.2lbs Day 20:123.2lbs Day 41: 121.0lbs
Not bad - 2.2lbs lost since I started, and this is near the end of phase 1 which was only supposed to last about a month. Can get through a session with less breaks and using a heavier weight, and more limber doing yoga and kenpo. Probably hard to notice 2.2lbs of fat gone, but I can definitely tell where the muscle has built up. :p
